Child safety standards
Last updated 24 October 2026
Kaanam helps adults meet in person at busy public places. We have zero tolerance for child sexual abuse and exploitation (CSAE), including child sexual abuse material (CSAM), grooming, and any attempt to meet, contact or exploit a child through Kaanam. This page explains the standards we hold ourselves to and how to report a concern.
Who can use Kaanam
- Kaanam is only for people aged 18 and over. Our terms say so, and an account can be closed if someone is found to be under 18.
- Every member shows a government ID and a live selfie, which our team checks before they can book a meetup. The ID and selfie are deleted after review.
- Members meet in busy public places that we choose and check. We recommend day trips back the same day.
What the app does and doesn't allow
- Group chat is text only. Members can't send photos, videos or files to each other.
- Members' photos, surnames, phone numbers and workplaces are not shown to other members before a meetup, and the chat blocks contact details.
- Content that sexualises children, or any attempt to meet or contact a child, is banned and leads to the account being closed.
How to report a concern
- In the app: press and hold any chat message to report it; report a member after a meetup; use "I don't feel safe" to leave a table privately; or send a message from Help & feedback.
- By email: write to [email protected] with "Child safety" in the subject. Include what happened and, if you can, the member's first name and the meetup date.
- If a child is in danger, call 112 first, or 1098 (Childline).
What we do when we receive a report
- Reports are private. The member reported is never told who reported them.
- Our team reviews child safety reports as a priority. We pause or close the account, remove the content, and keep the records needed for an investigation.
- We report apparent child sexual abuse or exploitation to the relevant authorities as the law requires, including under India's Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012, and we cooperate with law enforcement.
- People can also report online child sexual abuse material directly at cybercrime.gov.in, the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal.
Our commitments
- We comply with the child safety laws that apply to us in India, and with Google Play's child safety standards policy.
- We review these standards as Kaanam grows and update this page when they change.
